HALIA VALLADARES
Halia Valladares is a special projects Advisor to the Vice-President Academic at Capilano University. She is the former Dean of the Faculty of Business and Professional Studies at Capilano University. Halia has been a business professional in leadership positions for over two decades. She has been a university Professor and scholar for the past 16 years. She has served in different administrative positions in universities in different countries for over 10 years. She also has international business experience in the private sector, she was the Traffic, Shipping and Receiving Supervisor for a Fortune 100 Corporation. Halia recently incorporated her business Global Trading and DS in Canada and USA. She has authored more than 20 research publications for journals, book chapters and books in Mexico, Spain, Canada, Colombia, Venezuela, Pakistan, Cuba, USA, etc. Her most relevant publication in Canada is the textbook International Business: The Challenges of Globalization, published by Pearson and used at several Universities and Colleges to teach International Business.
MELANIA ALVAREZ
Melania grew up in Mexico City, where she completed her undergraduate education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She later earned master's degrees in economics and anthropology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and in operations research from Stanford University. In 2016 she completed a Ph.D. in mathematics education at Simon Fraser University under the supervision of Peter Liljedahl. At UBC, Melania is known for the summer mathematics camps she developed to improve the mathematical education of indigenous secondary-school students. She is the 2012 winner of the Adrien Pouliot Award, given by the Canadian Mathematical Society for significant contributions to mathematics education in Canada.
CARLOS GERARDO
Carlos D. Gerardo received his B.Sc. degree in electromechanical engineering in 2007 and his M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering in 2010 from the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi, SLP, Mexico. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2018 from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, where he developed the world’s first ultrasound sensor for biomedical imaging using inexpensive polymer materials. His new transducer design competes in performance with current ultrasound sensors and has the potential to dramatically lower the cost of ultrasound scanners to as little as $100. This research opens the way for wearable and personalized ultrasound systems. Dr. Gerardo is the co-founder of Sonus Microsystems Inc., a startup company based at the University of British Columbia with the aim to transform this pioneering technology into commercial products.
CLAUDIA MUÑOZ
Claudia studied medicine at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México where she specialized in Dermatology, and further specialized in Dermo-oncology and Dermatological surgery at Hospital General de México. She is a member of the Sociedad Mexicana de Dermatología, Academia Mexicana de Dermatología, Colegio Ibero Latino Americano de Dermatología, American Academy of Dermatology and is also a founding member of the Sociedad Mexiquense de Dermatología. Claudia moved to Vancouver in 2004 and her love and passion for skin issues and dermatology, together with her deep conviction that she had to use her knowledge for helping the society led her to find a way to use her skills; she become certified in Canada as an Advanced Skin Care Professional and Medical Esthetician. In February 2018, she opened Skin Blossom Professional Inc. At her new skin care clinic, each day Claudia demonstrates the warmth and caring that we all have gotten to know, as well as applying her knowledge and experience in serving our community.
